Orange Chicken

"Christmas is coming"

I’m always trying to find new and different ways to prepare chicken. Not that Orange chicken is a new thing, but it’s not really an everyday flavor for our home meals. When you think orange chicken you think Chinese take-out. This recipe is very flavorful and has beautiful citrus undertones. The chickens are browned to perfection and baked in the oven in a sweet sauce.

I was most excited to use my hickory smoked sea salt that I found in TJMaxx for this recipe.  Smoked salt has always been something I cook my meats with for added flavor. Adding some ginger to the mix also added some dimension to the flavor profile. I find orange and ginger pair very well together when it comes to meats.

You might be wondering why on earth I cooked 24 pieces of chicken, especially since most of my recipes need to be doubled because the portions are usually small.  I cooked this meal for a group of persons one Saturday for dinner. So you can follow this recipe exactly to make this for your holiday meal as this can serve 12 persons. If you will be making more or less chicken check the greedy tips.

To season chicken
24 pc Chicken
2 tablespoon Orange peel
2 tablespoon Smoked salt
1 teaspoon Black pepper
1 tablespoon Oil

4 tablespoon Oil (for browning chicken)

Sauce
2 Garlic cloves
¼ cup chopped Onion
1 cup Orange juice
2 tablespoon Orange zest
1 tablespoon Ginger
2 teaspoon Soy sauce
2 teaspoon Sugar
2 teaspoon honey

Greedy tips:

  • If you use less than 24 pieces of chicken, still make the same amount of sauce. However if your cooking for a very large party and making more chicken you may have to double the sauce ingredients.
