Crunchy Cinnamon Toast or Cinnamon toast crunch?

I am wondering why I have not been using dulce de leche to make my French toast all this time. It is so good! This toast was beyond delicious. No cinnamon toast crunch cereal was harmed in the making of this dish. However, it hits all the right notes.

Dulce de leche is quite easy to make, literally set it in the pot and forget it. The next day you will have a can full of delicious caramel, that can be used to make tea and spread on any dessert you choose. I highly recommend this brand of condensed milk that is already flavored with cinnamon vanilla and nutmeg. it is my favorite topping for bread pudding. 

Need a valentine’s day breakfast idea? I think you found it. I can only imagine this with a side of bacon and some scrambled eggs. The total cost for the six slices of toast was under $400 JMD. I figure three slices each of this is a belly full. And do not be worried it is not overly sweet. That surprised me because while developing the recipe I was really worried it would be just way too sweet. I was pleasantly surprised it was totally balanced and certainly not too sweet in the least.

Ingredients (Printable recipe)

for the dulce de leche
1 can condensed milk
for the French toast
½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 teaspoon lime zest
1 egg
¼ teaspoon salt
1 cup water
4 tablespoon dulce de leche
3 tablespoon butter
6 slice bread
for the cinnamon sugar
2/3 brown sugar
2 tablespoon cinnamon

Instructions

  • The day before place the can of condensed milk (wrapper removed) in a pot of water.
  • Cover, bring it to boil then simmer on low for 5-6 hours.
  • Allow it to cool completely before opening.
  • The next day combine, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, salt, lime zest, dulce de leche, egg, and water. mix to combine, making sure the dulce de leche has completely dissolved. Blending this in a blender maybe even quicker.
  • Melt a tablespoon of butter.
  • Soak two slices of bread in the mixture and fry in butter until golden on both sides.
  • Repeat for all 6 slices using 1 tablespoon of butter for every two slices of bread.
  • Take the hot slices of bread and toss in cinnamon sugar.

 

Greedy Tips:

  • Optional place the slices in a 400-degree oven for 5 minutes to get it extra crunchy
  • Additionally you can brush with a bit of melted butter on the toast before dipping in the cinnamon sugar if you want a heavier layer of cinnamon sugar coating.
