Super citrusy long island Iced tea

Cool it down

Happy Independence day!
Make this drink tonight to celebrate

Am I the only one who thought there was actual tea in a long island ice tea? I’ve always assumed that the drink was an ice tea with the addition of the spirits. Come to find out it’s all a fraud, just some cola added for color. This drink is a close cousin to the Long island iced tea. It has a few similar ingredients and almost the same flavor profile. I’ve always wanted to make a drink using gin, so this iced tea was as great an excuse as any.

A few months ago, a friend of mine introduced me to a gin called Bombay sapphire. It’s so floral distilled with almond peel, licorice, juniper berries, orris root, angelica, coriander, cassia, cubeb and grains of paradise. He mixes it with orange tang as a drink. That inspired me to make a citrusy drink using gin among other things.

Traditionally the Long island Ice tea is not as citrusy as I have made it. It has way more alcohol and uses sour mix or lime juice. However I wanted to make the drinks this month very refreshing and not too harsh on the alcohol content, hence my addition of the fresh squeezed orange juice. I like when a drink contains alcohol, but does not burn your chest or make you hot. This drink only contains, gin, triple sec and brandy and still has a very crisp and refreshing taste.

It is definitely not a sweet drink, especially if your oranges are sour, not to mention there is no added sugar. There is a nice tart bite with the spicy gin and the sour lime juice, It leaves a nice citrusy after taste on your tongue.  I’m glad I gave this one a try, I can’t say enough how refreshing the drink is.

“Drunkability”:  2+ I would say the average person could possibly have about 1 1/2 glasses even 2 of this comfortably. Don't let its refreshing taste fool you, it is strong, will most definitely get you twisted.

Ingredients (printable recipe)
Makes 2 servings

2 ounce gin
2 ounce triple sec
2 ounce brandy
2 oranges (juice)
2 limes (juice)
Few dashes of Pepsi or cola for color

Greedy tips:

  • This recipe can easily be double and tripled to fill a pitcher
  •  Make sure to strain the orange juice to get rid of the seeds
  • you can give it a double strain after the drink has been mixed (optional)
