Breakfast Jamaican Beef Patty

Belly Full on a Budget

Today’s cheap eat is elevating the left-over Jamaican beef patty. The beef patty is probably one of the most consumed dishes in Jamaica daily. It’s the Jamaican grab-and-go fast food. Deliciously seasoned meat baked inside the perfectly flakey crust, what could be better? Well, this breakfast patty is what is better! If you ever end up with leftover beef patties this is the way to bring them back to their original glory.

I remember the days when a beef patty was $11 Jamaican dollars. That was the case when I started high school in 1995. 5 years later in 2020 when I was about to graduate it was $22. Now it's $170! It’s almost unbelievable the price increases over the years. And even though the price has grown so much in the last 20 years, it's still one of the cheapest foods you can buy. We always end up with leftover patty in the refrigerator that nobody wants.

The microwave renders it soggy and warming 100 percent in the oven burns the crust before the filling is hot. So what’s the secret? Use both methods. The key to bringing back the patty, even if you don’t fill it with anything else, warm it in the microwave so the filling is hot them pop it in the toaster or oven for about 5 minutes at 450F so that the crust gets perfectly flakey and crunchy. It never fails. Every time I do a patty revamp everybody wants one. I’ve made it a few times for my ig story and figured I should immortalize it here on the blog.

The fillings are limitless, I have made several versions of this. These are four other favorites of mine for elevating a left-over patty in no particular order.

  1. lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese, and pepper jelly of course (I for the most part have the lettuce on the side or hold it on the outside of the patty because the hot filings usually wilt it and make it soggy instead of crunchy if it's on the inside
  2. Mac and cheese and minced onions
  3. Callaloo and cheese
  4. Fried Plantain, egg and cheese

All of the above? why not. If you have a leftover patty in your fridge right now this is your next meal!
